Enjoy the world of letterforms

In the era of technology, the generation remains engaged on various devices. The school assignments are now almost all online typing, printing, and then submitting to the teacher. The fingers very much sensitized with digital gadgets. Writing helps to improve many things, that of which we need to put focus on. Because of this, we want to introduce the Basic Calligraphy Course to utilize your free time.

What we achieve

You may think that calligraphy is a course just to improve handwriting, but we actually improve many other things as well. The course helps open the mind to creative insight. Steve Jobs, one of the most innovative minds we know today, was a calligrapher.

We never teach letter character; we teach letter form. When practicing letterform, we have the ability to learn any script in the world. To render the form, we draw various basic strokes. To maintain the consistency in strokes we need to concentrate on the paper and tool, here we improve concentration. When we maintain the angle of tool and repeat the same stroke, we develop craftsmanship. The curves and strokes form a letter character in which we focus on the angles and neatness in rendering. This approach helps us understand the aesthetics of letterforms. Holding a pen can activate the flow of a tool, the increase and release of pressure on a pen to achieve thick and thin strokes gives exercise to hand and body. Treating a letter as a form develops interest for learning and slowly, we improve handwriting.

Session plan: - The total course divided in various parts to achieve the goal.

  1. Introduction: How strokes come together and form letter character, how to hold the pen/ tool, how to sit, how to hold paper or notebook. These things look very basic, but one need to learn seriously to canalize the writing style.

  2.  Basic strokes required for constructing letter character. Study and practice of various calligraphy strokes.

  3. Letter character study – Understand the anatomy and structure of each letter character and practice small and capital letters in English.

  4. Words – When two, three or more letters come together we form words. But there is space adjustment between two letters. All these things need to practice and render words.

  5. Practice sentences and paragraph for various design applications.

  6. Application of calligraphy on various design deliverables.

e.g. Bookmarks, Name plates, Cards, book cover or gift wrapping, envelops, T shirt concept drawings   etc.
